At Maymessy, we create space for young people to feel heard, supported and inspired. Many of the young people we work with are balancing responsibilities at home, such as caring for a parent or sibling, managing stress or anxiety, or coping with difficult personal circumstances. Our workshops give them the time, tools and encouragement to reconnect with themselves and others in a calm, fun environment.
Cookery, teamwork and confidence-building
Our sessions focus on hands-on cooking, teamwork, and creative activities that promote independence, healthy choices and emotional wellbeing. Young carers and school groups visit our purpose-built cookery barn and edible garden to harvest fresh ingredients, prepare meals together and enjoy the results in good company.
We use cookery as a practical tool to explore nutrition, budgeting, communication, and life skills. Alongside this, participants gain confidence in a non-judgemental setting where every contribution is valued.

In 2023 alone, over 150 young people attended Maymessy workshops. Many were young carers, school refusers or facing challenges such as anxiety, low confidence or family hardship. Teachers and youth workers consistently tell us how impactful the sessions are, helping young people grow in self-esteem, develop new friendships and feel more hopeful.

A break from pressure
For many young carers, Maymessy is a rare chance to take a break from the demands of home, school or caring. We offer time to slow down, share stories, laugh, and feel part of something positive. We know that food brings people together, and through cooking, we create connection, comfort and calm.
Each session is adapted to the group’s needs and supported by a team of expert nutritionists and chefs, all of whom are DBS-checked, trained in safeguarding and qualified in first aid.
“Without doubt they really enjoyed it. I could see in their faces and the way they were interacting with you and working together, was so lovely to see. They were very proud of what they achieved and couldn’t wait to get back to their mum to give them a muffin. You have played a big part in what we try and achieve at YoCO and I thank you for that.We will be back!” — John Berinsfield, YoCO group

From pressure to purpose
Our kitchen features six state-of-the-art cooking stations, fully equipped by Miele, and can accommodate up to 12 participants at a time.
Visitors to Maymessy can get hands-on in the vegetable plot, enjoy cooking with professional tools, or take a break with a game of football or netball on the hard court. The experience ends with everyone sitting down to enjoy the nutritious meals they’ve prepared together. We believe the shared enjoyment of food is just as meaningful as its preparation.
Maymessy also offers volunteering opportunities and Duke of Edinburgh support for young people who take part in our programmes.
