At Maymessy, we deliver thoughtfully designed programmes for adults with learning disabilities and autism, providing a safe, uplifting space for people to learn, grow and feel valued. Our long-term partnership with local charity Style Acre has brought over 60 individuals and their support staff into our inclusive kitchen and garden to explore food, build friendships and experience the joy of achievement.
A place to feel calm, capable and welcome
Our cookery school is fully adapted to meet a range of physical and sensory needs. From the layout of the kitchen to the language we use in our recipes, we ensure that every person can engage at their own pace, without pressure or judgement. Many of our guests arrive with anxieties about food, difficulties around textures, or sensitivities to noise. Over time, we see confidence grow, preferences expand and social connections flourish.

Workshops are calm, friendly and practical. Ingredients are harvested fresh from our garden, and cooking tasks are broken down into manageable steps. Where needed, recipes are adapted to cater for allergies, intolerances, and specific support needs such as texture or sugar content. Every participant is supported by our trained team, and often by peers, in a nurturing environment that prioritises emotional safety and dignity.
Nurturing wellbeing through shared gardening
In addition to workshops, we host shared events like our summer picnic and cookery showcase, where everyone is invited to take pride in their achievements. These are joyful, relaxed occasions where participants and staff come together with families, volunteers and the wider community to celebrate good food, hard work and shared success.
We continue to welcome new groups and returning guests alike. Many participants grow with us, taking on more independence, leading tasks, and supporting others to find their voice. For us, this is the greatest reward: creating a space where people with learning disabilities and additional needs feel not only included, but empowered.

The Maymessy cookbook
In 2023, our collaboration with Style Acre led to the creation of a bespoke cookbook co-designed by the people we support. This wasn’t just a creative project—it was a powerful learning experience. Over the course of 32 workshops, participants trialled recipes, practised new skills and saw their work published. The book reflects the diversity of needs, tastes and personalities in the group, offering healthy, accessible meals that can be recreated at home or in supported living settings.
Every purchase of the Maymessy cookbook helps fund our programmes for people with learning disabilities and autism, while providing a practical collection of healthy, easy-to-follow recipes.
