Maymessy’s cookery school and therapeutic garden offer a calm, inclusive space where individuals can rebuild confidence, reduce isolation and reconnect with themselves and others. For people who have experienced mental ill-health, trauma or long periods of loneliness, the chance to be part of something purposeful and nurturing can be transformative.

A place to feel safe, calm and valued

Picking herbs, learning gardening skills, or enjoying a cup of tea and homemade cake with others, Maymessy is a place where people are heard, supported and empowered. With stunning countryside views and a deeply kind community at its centre, our garden is more than a space — it’s a lifeline.

Our orchard and edible garden are the heart of our therapeutic work. Originally planted by individuals recovering from mental illness through Root and Branch, the garden continues to grow under the care of regular volunteers—many of whom are past participants of our cookery classes and support programmes.

Nurturing wellbeing through shared gardening

Our orchard and edible garden are the heart of our therapeutic work. Originally planted by individuals recovering from mental illness through Root and Branch, the garden continues to grow under the care of regular volunteers, many of whom are past participants of our cookery classes and support programmes.

These volunteers meet monthly to plant, sow and harvest produce that is used in our cookery school. The sessions are gentle, therapeutic and meaningful. Volunteers share stories, build friendships and take pride in their contribution, with time to enjoy tea, coffee and cake while overlooking the peaceful green fields of Oxfordshire.

Confidence grows alongside the crops

Gardening knowledge is shared openly between team members and participants, encouraging everyone to learn and grow together. Participants not only engage with nature but also develop new skills. For many, it’s their first experience of growing food or cooking with fresh ingredients.

Volunteers like Nix, who began as a participant, have gone on to take leading roles, completing safeguarding training, mental health first aid, and leading activities with confidence and compassion.

We also run creative workshops such as photography, helping individuals explore their interests and gain confidence. One participant even had their photograph published on the front page of the Wantage Herald.
